Battery backup, UPS and generators

Solar saves money. Storage keeps you running when the supply drops. They are different jobs, so we design them separately and make them work together.

Who it is for

The first question is not "how many kWh?"

It is what has to stay on, and for how long. Backing up an entire site is almost always poor value, because you pay for storage you use a handful of times a year. The better approach is to split the board:

  • Critical

Refrigeration, servers, security, access control, alarms, emergency lighting, a cold chain that cannot break.

  • Useful

Office lighting, sockets, tills, part of a production line.

  • Everything else

Geysers, air-conditioning, heavy motors. Rarely worth backing up.

Once that split is agreed, the battery size follows from arithmetic instead of guesswork.

01

What we install

  • Lithium battery storage, sized to the critical load and the outage you need to ride through.
  • UPS for equipment that cannot tolerate even the switchover gap: servers, control systems, some refrigeration electronics.
  • Generators and changeover for long outages, wired so the generator, battery and array cooperate instead of fighting.
  • Hybrid inverters, so the same system cuts the daytime bill and carries the critical board at night.

Equipment is specified per site from brands such as Deye, Sunsynk, GreenRich and Freedom Won.

02

Where solar and storage work together

A grid-tied array on its own does not back you up: when the supply drops, the inverter must switch off for the safety of anyone working on the line. A hybrid system with storage does three things at once:

  • Cuts the daytime bill, like a grid-tied array.
  • Carries the critical board through an outage.
  • Where demand charges are heavy, shaves the peak half-hour and lowers the demand part of the account.
03

Should you keep the generator?

Usually yes, for the rare long outage. A generator is cheap to own and expensive to run; storage is the other way round. Keeping the generator for the once-a-year event while solar and battery carry everything else is normally the cheapest combination.

The deciding number is running hours. A set started twice a year is fine. One that runs several hours most days is quietly costing more than the system that would replace it. See solar vs a diesel generator.

How it works

From one bill to a running system

No guessed numbers. The price comes after somebody has stood on your roof.

  1. 01

    Send a bill

Answer three questions here, or WhatsApp a photo of a recent electricity account. That one page tells us more than a site photo ever will.

  2. 02

    Site visit and energy audit

We check the roof or ground, the distribution board, cable routes, shading and what must stay on when the supply drops.

  3. 03

    Proposal, cash and finance priced

System size, expected generation and payback, with a cash price and an ADSFinance option side by side.

  4. 04

    Install and Certificate of Compliance

Installed, tested and commissioned by our team, then handed over with a Certificate of Compliance.

  5. 05

    Monitoring and annual service

Remote monitoring from day one and a maintenance visit every year, so a fault does not hide for months.

FAQ

Backup power: common questions

Something else? WhatsApp 072 326 0268 or call 017 004 0001.

Will my solar system work during an outage?

Only if it has storage. A grid-tied system switches off when the supply drops. A hybrid or backup system with a battery keeps running, sized to the circuits you chose to protect.

How big a battery do I need?

It follows from what has to stay on and for how long, not from the size of the building. We split the board into critical, useful and everything else, then size storage for the critical load and the outage you want to cover.

Can a battery reduce my demand charges?

Yes, where demand charges are a meaningful part of the account. A battery that discharges during your peak half-hour lowers the maximum demand the tariff bills you on. Designing it properly needs your actual consumption data.

Do you install UPS as well as batteries?

Yes. A UPS covers equipment that cannot tolerate even the brief switchover gap, such as servers and control systems. It usually works alongside battery storage rather than instead of it.
